My Nighttime Reading Routine as a Mom

Finding time to read as a mom can feel impossible. Between managing the household, caring for my 11 month old, working and handling daily tasks, having a moment to yourself often falls to the bottom of the list. Yet, reading before bed has become a cherished part of my routine. It helps me unwind and enjoy a quiet moment away from the day's chaos. Here’s a look at how I make reading work for me each night, even with a busy family life.
Setting the Stage for Reading
Creating a peaceful environment is key to enjoying my nighttime reading. After I put my son down, I dim the lights and prepare a cozy spot. This usually means grabbing a drink; water or wine and settling into my favorite spot in my house (my bed). I keep a small reading lamp nearby so that I don't have our huge ceiling light blaring down on me but that does get tricky sometimes because that makes it easier to fall asleep.
To minimize distractions, I put my phone on “Do Not Disturb.” This simple step helps me focus fully on the book without interruptions from notifications or messages. I also make sure the room temperature is comfortable, as being too hot or cold can make it hard to relax.

Choosing the Right Books
The type of book I pick really depends on my mood. I try not to have a crazy long list of books that I'm reading at once. It's usually a pinwheel of romance, fantasy and thrillers.
Sometimes I'll want something light such as: a Sports romance or small town romance. I tend to reach for those if I had a hard day. Sometimes I'll reach for a thriller and that's when I want to challenge myself and question everything. And then there's fantasy which is when I want the excitement of being in a whole new world.
Making Reading a Habit
Consistency is what turns reading into a routine. I aim to read for at least 20 minutes every night. This small commitment fits well into my schedule and feels manageable even on the busiest days. To keep myself accountable, I set a reminder on my phone or place my book on my pillow as a visual cue.
If I’m too tired to read, I don’t force it. Instead, I might listen to an audiobook while lying in bed. This allows me to enjoy stories without straining my eyes or feeling overwhelmed. Audiobooks also work well during moments when I’m winding down but not quite ready to sleep.
Benefits I’ve Noticed
Reading before bed has brought several positive changes to my life as a mom. It helps me:
Reduce stress by shifting my focus away from worries and daily tasks.
Improve sleep quality by calming my mind and signaling my body that it’s time to rest.
Expand my knowledge and gain new perspectives, especially through my fantasy books
Enjoy personal time that feels rewarding and peaceful.
These benefits make the effort to maintain a reading routine worthwhile, even when time feels tight.

Tips for Moms Who Want to Start Reading at Night
If you’re a mom looking to build a nighttime reading habit, here are some practical tips:
Start small with just 10 or 15 minutes a night to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Choose books that interest you and suit your mood at bedtime.
Create a comfortable reading space that invites relaxation.
Limit screen time before bed to help your brain switch to reading mode.
Be flexible and use audiobooks if you’re too tired to read physically.
Remember, the goal is to enjoy the experience, not add another task to your to-do list.
Balancing Reading with Family Life
Sometimes, family needs can interrupt my reading time. When this happens, I remind myself that flexibility is important. I might read earlier in the evening or during a quiet moment after the kids go to sleep. On weekends, I often spend longer periods reading when the house is calm.
Involving my son in reading also helps. We share bedtime stories, which encourages love of books and creates a special bonding time. This shared experience makes reading feel like a family activity rather than a solo one.
